Brecon 73 - Llanharan 7

On a cold but dry autumn afternoon Brecon moved smoothly into the third round of the WRU Plate with a comprehensive victory over visitors Llanharan. Llanharan are a club with a proud history. Over many years they were one of the premier non-professional Clubs. More recently, however, the “Dairy Men” have slipped down the leagues. Currently playing in Division 2 East Central they are finding life difficult with just one win from their seven league matches to date. A journey to Parc de Pugh cannot have filled them with hope and expectation. With Brecon having hit something of a purple patch in recent matches it was credit to the visiting team that they turned up to fulfil the fixture. Brecon certainly did not treat their opponents lightly and right from the kick off they set out to dominate their opponents on the field and on the scoreboard. The first try was scored at the fourth minute mark. After an outstanding run by prop Richie Davies, Cameron Gardner and Lewys Cooke combined brilliantly to give flanker Ioan Edwards an opening. He drove through the remaining defence to open the scoring and outside half Gari Davies slotted the conversion. That opening score set the pattern for what was yet to come as Llanharan were swept away.

For the second week in succession Brecon recorded 11 tries and with Gari Davies slotting 9 conversions the final score again exceeded 70 points. Davies, as well as kicking 18 points fitted in to the outside half role beautifully on his first appearance of the season. This week the scores were more evenly distributed amongst the team with the forwards claiming four tries. Each of those was great reward for the unselfish work of the individuals involved. Ioan Edwards, harried, carried and supported brilliantly, as he has done throughout the season and there he was at the end of a flowing move to crash over for the first score. Within another four minutes second row Andrew Hosie crashed over after he had initiated the move on half way with a great run. The move featured an outrageous offload as scrum half Geraint Workman delivered a pass from behind his back. Hooker Elgan Lewis was the third forward to score. On 24 minutes and with Brecon leading by 24 points to nil, Elgan broke through a couple of tackles some 15 metres out and backed himself to make the line for an impressive try. The final of the quartet of forward tries came from Richie Davies. This was Richie’s second try in two weeks and again showed his amazing mobility. Young scrum half Geraint Workman made an outstanding break through mid-field and put himself clear of all opponents but there on his shoulder was Richie Davies, who had tracked him all the way. Workman unselfishly fed Richie, much to the delight of the supporting crowd.

The remaining 7 tries were scored by the backs with some familiar names on the scoresheet. Jake Crockett obviously featured heavily. He followed up his hat trick of the previous week with another hat trick. Overall his pace and balance posed huge problems for the Llanharan defence and his finishing could not be faulted. Close behind in the try stakes was centre Sam Campbell. One of Sam’s tries was a long range affair where he tore away from his opponents to score under the posts. Centre partner Cameron Gardner added a try to the two he scored the previous week and the scoring was rounded off when Gardner again broke clear and put exciting, young scrum half, Geraint Workman over.

While the remainder of the squad failed to hit the scoring headlines their contributions were obviously invaluable. The James brothers, Jonathan and Ryan, impressed on their second outing with the 1st XV. Both carried powerfully and now add considerable strength in depth to the second and back rows. Ewan Williams was as always impressive from number eight although in view of the heavy schedule to come in the near future he was pulled off at half time for a well-deserved rest. Will Prosser again impressed from the back row while in the backs Mike Powell put in some powerful runs both on his right wing berth and in midfield where his incursions attracted defenders and created gaps for his team-mates. Finally, Lewys Cooke, in the unfamiliar position of left wing looked completely at home. He was elusive and linked beautifully with his supporting players. While he didn’t score, he was constantly creative and set up opportunities for others.

To Llanharan’s credit they did score an excellent try on the stroke of half time. Their outside half, who was forced to operate off the back foot for most of the game, looked an accomplished player. He initiated a move from inside his half and both finished it off and scored the conversion.

As the team celebrated the news filtered through that the Youth won their WRU Youth 2nd round Cup match at Abercynon by the narrowest of margins, 30 points to 29. This was an outstanding win as Abercynon play in the in the Blues Premiership league. To round off a successful day the 2nd XV also returned from their top of the table match at Porth with an outstanding 34 points to 7 victory which keeps them at the top of the Mid District Premiership league.

The next fortnight will be a very important period for Brecon as the 1st XV prepare for a season defining match against unbeaten table toppers, Brynmawr on 10th November.
