V.P. Charity Dinner with Martyn Williams

As the Rugby Season moves into its final weeks Brecon RFC Vice Presidents hosted a Charity Dinner at the club. The Dinner was in part a celebration of a successful season in which the 1st XV consolidated their position in Division 1 with a 5th place finish. The 2nd XV look forward to a final match when they play Penallta at Dowlais in the Ivor Williams Cup on Thursday 4th May and the Youth team after winning their league will contest two finals. In the Heart of Wales Youth Cup they face Mountain Ash at Merthyr on Saturday 6th May and either Gwernyfed or Ystradgynlais in the Breconshire Youth Cup at Brecon on Thursday 11th May. The other main aim of the evening was to raise funds in support of Llanelli Warriors, a team which provides opportunities for players with learning disabilities to take part in regular friendly competition. In particular this year the team is undertaking the ambitious project of travelling to play matches in New Zealand and Samoa at the same time as the Lions Tour.

So often events, understandably, are held in the interests of the organisation itself but there are times when it is important to reach out and support others within the rugby community. With this as the background, Brecon RFC was fortunate to enlist the support of Martyn Williams. Martyn, now retired and a regular TV pundit, had an illustrious Rugby career. He represented Wales in 100 matches, won two Grand Slams, was selected as player of the 6 Nations in 2005 and travelled on three British Lions Tours. In addition to his presence as Guest Speaker Martyn supplied a signed Wales 6 Nations Rugby Shirt and ball. His presence and his entertaining and informative talk created a wonderful atmosphere which encouraged those present to exceed the organisers’ expectations. A target of £1000 was set and a display cheque was prepared but at the end of the evening the total contribution towards the Warriors exceeded £2000.

Ieuan Davies, who was presented with a token cheque by Martyn Williams, said, “A huge thank you to Brecon RFC for the massive amount of money raised and donated to our Club. Not many Clubs would do that. Diolch yn Fawr.”

The evening concluded with warm thanks to Martyn Williams for his outstanding input and to the evening’s sponsors, Kevin Robins, KCR Wealth Management and Phil Buck, Spencer Coatings Group.
