Newbridge Youth 10 - Brecon Youth 15

Brecon Youth made club history on Saturday with a historic win taking them into the quarter finals of the National Youth Cup for the first time.

Rugby is not all about academy, regional and international players; Newbridge had plenty in their squad; it is about a group of players grabbing the moment and delivering, and this group of Brecon players certainly did that on Saturday afternoon

In a nervy start to the match both teams used their big forwards to try and gain the upper hand. Territory in the first half was shared but it was the home side who opened the scoring with a well struck penalty after 25 minutes. Brecon struck back immediately when winger Joe McDean scored in the corner to make it 5 pts to 3pts thus giving Brecon the lead just before the interval.

The start of the second half belonged to Brecon with their forwards dominating up front, carrying ball and recycling with aplomb and it wasn’t long before the next score came.

After a series of drives with forwards and backs combining well, busy flanker Henry Morgan Gervis crashed over in the corner to extend Brecon’s lead after 60 minutes. The momentum had swung in favour of the visitors and the large contingent of Brecon spectators began to relax and dream of the next round with them leading 10-3.

There was more drama later in the half as inspirational captain and deserved man of the match, Josh Pritchard scored the try of the day. Taking the ball on the Newbridge 22 metre line and using sheer determination and some guile to make it over the white wash for the all important score to give Brecon a 15-3 lead.

It appeared that Brecon had done enough, but unfortunately Newbridge had not read the script and scored a converted try to close the gap with 5 minutes remaining. To make matters worse, skipper Pritchard was yellow carded, giving Newbridge the momentum in the frantic finish. It was all hands to the deck at a period of a game when you find out the character of the side and Brecon did not disappoint

A great defensive effort by the remaining 14 players saw the game out in what was a nervous end to an incredible game. Brecon won this match with an excellent game plan, and through a sheer commitment and desire which gave them a deserved memorable win and a place in the Welsh cup quarter final. The relief and sheer joy on the faces all of the Brecon players and supporters when the ref called time in a game was clear for all to see

For the coaches , management, players and supporters it will go down as one of those "I was there games". Well done to all those involved - you were all magnificent and deserve all the plaudits, making all at Brecon RFC proud

The club now await the Quarter final draw with these matches due to be played on February 16th 2019.
